PostSubject: variable power supply   Sun Aug 24, 2008 2:28 am

just finished making a variable power supply, it using a LM317 regulator. it can provide voltage from 1.3V-14V at 2amps of current. it using power from wall outlet, and a 20V 6amps transformer. 2 amps is just not enough to recharge a 12V car battery. or power up my 12V 50W spot-light that i got from dollar ramma. so, any ideas to make my power supply have more current?

You could make a few more and put them in parallel, or you could make a switching regulator and use a transistor to make it handle as much power as you need. Switching regulators do not get nearly as hot as linear regulators, because they are MUCH more efficient.

You could even use a computer's power supply. I have one that I use for high current things like powering a peltier or charging Li-Ion batteries.

For a switching regulator? They can get a bit more complicated, but each one has its own circuit. You will need to fine one that matches your needs. I usually use National Semiconductor's regulators. You can use the tool at the right of the page to find one that fits you needs.

The LM3489 looks good.
